The introduction of Charles IV - 'Emperor of Four Thrones' to Ireland

To celebrate the 700th anniversary of the birth of this influential ruler of Bohemia the Embassy of the Czech Republic, in conjunction with the Office of Public Works in Ireland, presented the exhibition ‘Emperor of Four Thrones – A Life Journey of Charles IV in Fourteen Stops’. The exhibition ran from mid-June to late August in Dublin Castle. The exhibition was very well received by both Irish and international visitors to Dublin Castle throughout the busy summer months.

As the exhibition highlighted, Charles IV was a diplomatically skilful ruler who elevated Prague to its position as the cultural, political and economic centre of Europe, and by the end of his reign this famous city was the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. Charles IV exerted huge influence over the political, cultural and social landscape of his day. He was also a generous patron of the arts and sciences and oversaw the foundation of Charles Bridge, St. Vitus Cathedral and Charles University in Prague, as well as Karlštejn Castle and the town of Karlovy Vary outside of the Czech capital.

Below are photos from the ceremonial opening of the exhibition, which was held on 14th June 2016.
