The prestigious Douglas Hyde Gallery in Dublin showcased a selection of works by the world renowned Czech photographer, Josef Sudek. The exhibition, marking the 120th anniversary of Sendek’s birth and the 40 years since his passing, was organised with the assistance of the Czech Embassy and displayed photographs from the collection owned by PPF Art. The Czech Embassy would like to express its deep gratitude to PPF Art for lending the photographs for this exhibition.
The curator of the exhibition, Gallery Director John Hutchinson selected thirty-two photographs, to present Sudek´s work - from his early stage during the period of pictorialism, mystical images from Prague streets and nooks and from the Czech countryside to his original bromide paper prints. The exhibition was accompanied by screenings of three documentary films (“Live Your Life” by director Evald Schorm from 1963, “The Photographer and Music” by director Eva Marie Bergerová from 1974 and “The photographer in the Garden” by Marie Šandová from 2000). In addition to the exhibition, Michael Hill and Rachel McIntyre prepared a separate catalogue.
The exhibition attracted the attention of both experts and the general public, and was seen by 7,500 visitors, of which a number availed of guided tours by the gallery staff.
In conjunction with the exhibition, on 25 January 2017, Dr Jana Van Der Ziel, an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies in Trinity College Dublin, gave a lecture on “Cultural Censorship in Czechoslovakia”.
