CZECH BEER
Beer (in Czech: pivo) in Czech lands has a long history, with brewing taking place in Břevnov Monastery in Prague already in 993. The second largest city of the Czech Republic Brno had the right to brew beer from the 12th century. Other Czech cities world-known for their beer – Plzeň (Pilsen) and České Budějovice (Budweis) – had breweries from the 13th century. The brewing method has been passed through generations and beer became an undeniable part of the Czech cultural tradition.
Czechvar and Praga, both from České Budějovice (Budweis), Pilsner Urquell, Bernard and Brouczech are the main partners of the Czech Beer Festival Chicago 2017.
MORAVIAN PLUM BRANDY
Throughout Central Europe, brandy produced from plums (slivovitz) has been popular for centuries. According to old manuscripts, there were approximately seventy-thousand plum trees in the area surrounding Vizovice (Czech Republic) at the beginning of the 18th century. The area became known as the Valley of Plums.
The tradition of Moravian plum brandy is presented by R. Jelínek distillery, one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of fruit distillates founded in 1894.
“TREASURES” FROM KARLOVY VARY
Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) is a world-famous spa town situated in western Bohemia, Czech Republic. It is named after Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia, who founded the city in 1370. It is historically famous for its hot springs (13 main springs, about 300 smaller springs, and the warm-water Teplá River). The city is also known for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. It has been used as the location for a number of film-shoots, including box office hits Last Holiday and Casino Royale.
The water of from the unspoiled nature around Karlovy Vary with an unmistakable taste will be brought to us by Mattoni Mineral Water company, founded in 1873 and present on the US market soon after that.
Karlovy Vary also gave birth to a herbal liqueur Becherovka, first sold in 1807. This internationally famous digestive will also be present at the festival.
BOHO – Bohemian House
Located in Chicago’s River North Neighborhood at State and Illinois, Bohemian House captures the lighthearted and carefree essence of Bohemian culture. Exposed brick walls and wood timber, eclectic décor, warm earth tones and soft lighting set the backdrop for a comfortable and sociable dining experience. Chef Rob Sidor presents an original menu of Bohemian-inspired fare with influences not only from the Czech Republic, but also other Central European countries. Bohemian House takes an eclectic approach to traditional European spirits and brews, with its drinks designed to complement the cuisine.
Sokol Tabor
Sokol – the falcon, is a bird who, by his swiftness and energy, symbolizes the active, vigorous, strenuous, real Spartan life, which is the ideal of Sokol programs. First Sokol Organization was founded in 1862 in the Czech lands which later became Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic and Slovak Republic) and soon it arrived to the United States. Sokol Tabor was one of the first units founded here. Last year it celebrated its 150th anniversary. It continues as a vital, thriving entity. Based on founder of Sokol Dr. Miroslav Tyrs’ credo of “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body” it offers physical training in gymnastics and other athletics, as well as provides cultural awareness and family oriented activities.
