The Embassy, in cooperation with the Association of Slavists in Romania and the University of Bucharest, participated in the organisation of a conference to mark the significant 90th anniversary of the opening of the Czech language lectureship at one of the largest Romanian universities. The conference was held on 4th of October in the framework of the 12th International Symposium "Romanian Slavic Studies and Dialogue of Cultures". The conference was attended by Czech experts from Charles University, the Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Ethnology and Central European and Balkan Studies, translators and interpreters, who contributed greatly to the high professionalism and success of the event.
The study of Czech language and literature has historically been a fundamental component of Slavic studies in Romania, as evidenced by the date of the establishment of the Department of Slavic Studies at the University of Bucharest, which took place as early as 1891. At that time, however, Bohemian Studies did not yet have its own department. In 1934, thanks to the interest in the Czech language and the efforts of Romanian personalities, the first seminar of Czech systematic studies was established. After the Second World War, the lectureship's activities developed, especially in the 1960s and 1970s. At present, it can be stated that the situation in the field of Czech language studies at the University of Bucharest is gratifying. In this academic year, 20 new students are registered to study the Czech language and 4 students are registered in the Master's programme.
The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the University, including Dean Laura Sitaru, Head of the Department of Russian and Slavic Philology Axinia Crasovschi, President of the Association of Slavists in Romania Antoaneta Olteanu and its Vice President Sorin Paliga. Czech experts from Charles University Pavla Chejnova, Libuše Valentová, translator and interpreter Jitka Lukešová, researchers from the Czech Academy of Sciences Ilona Janyšková and Helena Karlíková, Jarmila Horáková from the Institute of Ethnology and Central European and Balkan Studies were slso present, as well as representatives of the embassy, students and other guests.
