China has imposed an ambitious plan and intends to build in the very south of the country in the province of Guangxi Liuzhou city, less than six hours drive from Hanoi miraculous automotive center for the entire region of Southeast Asia, and perhaps the world.
Each of the 3.75 million residents of the wider perimeter Liuzhou get 6500 USD GDP living in one of the key industrial cities of southwestern China. In addition, metallurgy and engineering is already the main economic pillar of the automotive industry. The total turnover of the industry in Liuzhou exceeded 16 billion USD in 2011. Production of 1.5 million new vehicles in the region ranked Liuzhou third after Beijing and Shanghai.
This is all just the beginning: by 2030, according to current projects, the city’s total automotive industry in terms of sales reach USD 95 billion and become the main center for the automotive industry in the PRC, the Chinese Detroit. For this purpose, a new 203 km2 area called Liuzhou Motor City (or Liudong New District) is busily being built. There will be established eight separate industrial centers, including office and residential facilities and, of course, specialized school and colleges. They will produce cars here, but also utility vehicles which will be highly environmentally friendly at the same time. Liuzhou wishes to be a city of the future, for its tourist attractions and also its environmental awareness.
Nowadays, in the region of Liuzhou, there are four major car manufacturers SAIC, FAW, Steam and Sinotruck. Nissan or GM also transmits its production to Liuzhou. Moreover, in the town there are many other smaller factories, in particular car accessories.
Due to its strategic location, Liuzhou is also considered as a link between the PRC and ASEAN countries, which is why it intends to become a major supplier of cars and car parts for all PRC and Southeast Asia. A significant milestone in the expansion is a special duty-free agreement between the PRC and ASEAN, which will include cars and automobile manufacturing.
Local government has already organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Commerce, the second fair called China-ASEAN Automobiles, Construction Equipments, Components & Parts Exposition. Among the exhibitors were manufacturers, suppliers of vehicles and automotive parts, holding companies, chambers of commerce and design companies mainly from China but also from other ASEAN countries, which were shielded by high-level representatives of their countries (such as the Cambodian Minister of Commerce).
EU is included in this cooperation too. China is aware that EU countries as a whole are the PRC's biggest trading partner and source of know-how, which they hold as being a priceless relationship. Representatives of some embassies (For example, in Czech embassy Sandra Lang Linkensederová) were invited to the China-Europe Cooperation & Development of Automobile Industry Forum, held in parallel with the main exhibition. They could introduce the automobile industry of their countries, and together think about the opportunities for cooperation. This should be implemented especially in a joint industrial park, which should arise in the future just around Liuzhou. This park should provide space for European technologies with high added value and managerially define the EU-China joint expansion into new (Asian) markets. Our goal will be to help the Czech producers in order to be active in this process.
