Ambassadors of the Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs) gathered at a roundtable in Harbin to discuss the possibilities of deepening cooperation with the Heilongjiang Province and Harbin Municipality of China. The China Secretariat for the Cooperation with Central and Eastern European Countries (Initiative 17+1) organized the meeting, which took place on June 17-18.
Ambassador Tomšík presented the basic facts about the Czech Republic and mentioned the active role Czech Republic plays within the 17+1 Initiative. In his presentation, he listed the areas in which the Heilongjiang Province and the Czech Republic could cooperate. Among those he mentioned: winter sports (Czech outdoor equipment manufacturer Alpine Pro Company has been successfully operating in the region supplying its winter outdoor clothing to local ski resorts), forestry, music and culture (Harbin boasts the oldest Chinese symphony orchestra; former Czechoslovak legions were based in Harbin) or tourism (the world-famous Ice and Snow Festival is held annually in Harbin). The specific content of cooperation possibilities the ambassador discussed with Vice-Governor of Heilongjiang Province Mr. Wang Wentao as well as with Mayor of Harbin Mr. Sun Zhe.
This year, the Czech Embassy as part of its Czech Days activities is focusing on cooperation with the North East China region, in whose core is located the Heilongjiang Province with Harbin Municipality. With regard to the presence of the Czechoslovak legions in this area at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, both Embassy of the Czech Republic and Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Beijing, in cooperation with the relevant ministries of both countries, are joining their hands in their ambition to place a commemorative plaque in Harbin.
