The reforestation event - Green Legacy (Arengwade Ashara) continues in Ethiopia for the fourth year. This program, announced by the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, is a response to the rapid population growth and associated deforestation in Ethiopia over the past 100 years.
As in previous years, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Ethiopia is also taking part in the event this year. With the help of local farmers in North Shewa, seedlings of local trees were planted - Afrocarpus glacilior (in Amharic: ዝግባ zigba) and Juniperus procera (in Amharic: ጥድ tsid), which belong among the native Ethiopian conifers. The Czech Embassy in Addis Ababa thus contributed to the government's goal of planting 6 billion trees this year to restore forests to the Ethiopian landscape, thereby reducing soil erosion and providing future fuel for farmers in remote areas. The Embassy staff will continue to plant more trees until the end of this kremt (long rainy season) in early September.
