Today, on May 25th, we mark the international Africa Day. On this day in 1963, the Organization of African Unity – the cornerstone of today’s African Union – was founded.
Africa is an important partner of the Czech Republic and European Union neighbor, which means ours as well. Prosperity and security of our continents are closely interconnected. The Czech Republic welcomes that socio-economic development and stability of the African continent has become one of the European Union priorities, which will be confirmed at the upcoming EU – Africa summit.
During the challenging times of the COVID-19, it has been crucial to cooperate more closely than ever before and to jointly manage the deep negative implications of the pandemic. Therefore, throughout 2020 and 2021, the Czech Republic has focused mainly on assisting the African countries in their fight against the pandemic, especially in the medical field. We provided medical and sanitary equipment from Czech companies to Ethiopia, Ghana, South Africa, Morocco, Nigeria, Tunisia, and Zambia.
In addition to the economic and social consequences, the COVID-19 pandemic has in some African regions an impact on security. Ensuring security is a necessary prerequisite for development. Therefore, in line with the efforts of our African and European partners, the Czech Republic has made a significant long-term contribution to stability of African countries.
However, the Czech Republic's activities in Africa are successfully enhancing in all relevant areas, including political, economic, development, scientific and cultural collaboration. They rely on a network of 13 Embassies across the whole continent.
It is important to remember how close the Czech Republic and Africa are. Therefore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic is pleased to join the statement issued on the occasion of the Africa Day by the African Group of Ambassadors in Prague.
As part of the Africa Day celebrations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs organizes an on-line seminar and presentation of an interesting OECD and African Union report: „Africa’s Development Dynamics 2021.“ The topic of this year’s report is digitalization as a powerful tool of transformation of Africa towards better job opportunities and crisis resilience. We cordially invite you to participate at this seminar, the invitation will be shared at a later date.
