On 18 of March, Ambassador of the Czech Republic gave a lecture on African languages. The event took place in the Africa Unbound Museum, a multifaceted space, that teaches about Pan-African history, perspectives, community, and future unification. The Museum proudly calls itself the "Representation of the Soul of Africa".
The Ambassador introduced the complexity of different languages and its connection to culture and politics. There are currently 1500-2000 spoken languages worldwide, whereas Africa is home to about one-third of them. Some languages on the continent are currently dying out while others are growing and replacing colonial languages.
The seminar by H.E. Pavel Mikeš was according to the participants:" fascinating and illuminating".
The Ambassador provided interesting comparatives of language families in Africa and Europe as well as within Africa, discussed languages that are newly-born, expanding, and dying and also covered the origins of various languages in Africa. The audience was intriqued by the lecture and raised probing questions such as: What is the impact (benefits and costs) of having so many different languages in Africa in the political, social, and economic spheres? What are the possibilities of developing a unifying language on the continent? What are the conditions that must be met to develop a unifying language?
The lecture was attended by more than 30 persons with interest in linguistics, language policy and history. The discussion after the lecture took more than two hours, which proves the deep interest the participants took in the subject.
