Ambassador Pavel Mikeš Donated Books to the Abrehot National Library in Addis Ababa

September 21, 2022 - Czech Ambassador Pavel Mikeš together with representatives of the Foreign Ministry of Ethiopia visited the Abrehot Library and donated a wide selection of books by Czech authors in English, French and Spanish to it.
Renowned names of the Czech literature art were present: works by Milan Kundera, Karel, Čapek, Franz Kafka, Ladislav Klíma, Bohumil Hrabal, Jaroslav Hašek, but also arts and photography books by Josef Koudelka, Jiří Slíva, Michal Cihlář, Alexandra Koláčková, Ivana Štenclová and many others will be now easily accessible to the wider Ethiopian public. A special interest was aroused by a book by Miroslav Bárta et al. on collapses of civilisations, and a book by Miloš Pojar on T. G. Masaryk and the Jewish Question. It is worth remarking that one of the participants in the event was Mr. Jan Svoboda of the Czech Academy of Sciences, a well-know Czech specialist on philosophy of T.G. Masaryk.
H.E. Ambassador Pavel Mikeš was given a tour of the Library by Eng. Wubayehu Mamo, Director at Abrehot Library. He was accompanied by colleagues of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Mr. Gebru Teklay, and Mr. Girma Demissie, representatives of Czech private sector and academia. During the tour, Ambassador Pavel Mikeš promised that Czech Embassy will continue to support and engage with the Abrehot National Library in the future in order to further strengthen the already excellent relations between the Czech Republic and Ethiopia
The Abrehot Library, is a newly opened library in Addis Abeba of an attractive modern design. It was inaugurated by the Prime Minsiter of Ethiopia in January 2022. Abrehot translates into English as ‘’Enlightenment’’, it is of a Geez origin, and shows deep historical, literary and cultural roots of Ethiopia. The Library is proud to be currently the biggest library in East Africa. The Library currently holds 600,000 books on its 4-storey building and has 1.5 km long shelves. The Library has the capacity to accommodate 2,000 users at a time and it already has around 20.000 registered members. The Library has 8 bookstores, a meeting room that accommodates 200 people, a cafeteria, children’s reading area, also a space where mothers can attend to their children. The Library is daily visited by around 8.000 readers.
