The Entry/Exit System (EES) is an automated information system of the European Union used to register non-EU citizens (third-country nationals) when crossing the external borders of the Schengen Area. Following its full launch on 10 April 2026, the system completely replaced the former manual stamping of passports with digital recording.

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is an automated information system of the European Union used to register non-EU citizens (third-country nationals) when crossing the external borders of the Schengen Area. Its main objective is the modernization of border control, increasing security, and the automatic calculation of the duration of authorized short-term stay (a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period).
Who does the EES registration apply to?
Registration in the EES system is mandatory for third-country nationals (non-EU and non-Schengen citizens) who: 1) Travel to one of the 29 European countries using the EES for a short-term stay (up to 90 days); 2) Travel visa-free (e.g., citizens of the UK, USA) or with a short-term visa.
Who DOES NOT the EES apply to?
1)Citizens of EU countries, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway;2) Foreigners who hold a valid residence permit or a long-term visa in the respective European country.
You do not need to do anything in advance at home or online to register for the EES. The entire process is completely free of charge and takes place directly at the border crossing (airports, seaports, land borders) during your first entry.
