On 7 August 2019, Viktor Michalík, Deputy Head of Mission, visited Yadanabon University in Mandalay on the invitation of the local Students’ Union. During his visit he was met by the Rector, Prof. Dr. Maung Maung Naing, with whom he discussed the possibilities of mutual cooperation between Myanmar and the Czech universities. Then he attended an almost two-hours meeting with students-members of the Students’ Union, explaining them the functioning of students' associations and organizations in the Czech Republic.
During the discussion, the students showed extraordinary interest not only in the Czech students’ associations and unions, but also e.g. in interlibrary loan service and in the functioning of the Czech universities in the legal environment of the Czech Republic. Their interest in the Czech Republic in general was amplified by the recent official visit of the State Counsellor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, H. E. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to Prague in June this year.
The Yadanabon University is relatively young one, founded in 2000 as Yadanabon College and promoted to a university status in 2003. It is classified as an Arts and Sciences University in the Myanmar's education system and more than 22,000 of its students specialize here both in humanities (linguistics, philosophy, oriental studies or anthropology) and also in the subjects of strictly technical nature, such as industrial chemistry, nuclear physics or computer technology.
Mutual sharing of knowledge during the visit was beneficial for both sides and the students were also provided with information on study opportunities in the Czech Republic. Let us look forward to meeting some of them in our country in the near future.
