Information on the higher authentication (apostille) required for documents issued by the Czech authorities for use by the authorities in Lithuania and documents issued by the Lithuanian authorities for use by the authorities in the Czech Republic
The Czech Republic and Lithuania are members of the 1961 Hague Convention on authentication. Public or legal documents (e.g. birth certificate, marriage certificate, criminal record, divorce decree, etc.) therefore must be authenticated by a higher authentication in the form of a certification clause called an apostille for its use in another Hague Convention member state. The apostille serves as a confirmation of the authenticity and validity of the document, without it, the document of one State is invalid for the authorities of another State.
In order to use a document issued by the Czech public in Lithuania, the document must be stamped with an apostille, which is issued in the Czech Republic by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (note: for some documents, a legalisation clause from the authority superior to the issuing authority must be secured before the apostille is issued).
Further details on the procedure for authenticating documents issued or certified by a Czech authority for use abroad can be found on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.
Similarly, in order to use a Lithuanian public document in the Czech Republic, the document must contain an apostille, which is issued by the competent Lithuanian authorities, in this case authorised notaries. Each of the authorised notaries is entitled to issue an apostille to a public document issued in the Republic of Lithuania.
In addition, in order to use the document in the Czech Republic, it is usually necessary to provide it with a translation into the Czech language, including a translation of the apostille. The translation must be made by a certified translator who is registered in the Czech Republic or certified by the Czech embassy abroad.
