Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Estonia, Zdeněk Beránek, visited the city of Narva on 22-23 October 2026. During meetings with representatives of the local government, educational institutions, defense organizations and an investment promotion agency, he discussed security issues, economic development, education, and the integration of local communities in Narva and the wider Ida-Viru region.
As part of the visit, the Ambassador met with representatives of the Ida-Viru Investment Agency, which has been supporting the attraction of foreign investment to the region for the last 16 years. Discussions focused on the economic transformation of this traditionally industrial area, new investment opportunities, and the development of projects financed from Estonian and European sources. Topics also included the activities of the industrial incubator, film studios, and the presence of major foreign investors in the region.
During his meeting with Narva Mayor Jaan Toots, the Ambassador discussed the security situation in this border region, education and social policy issues, the implementation of Estonia's school reform, and the construction of a new military base. At Narva College, a constituent college of the University of Tartu, the Ambassador learned about the institution's activities, particularly in teachers' training, language education, IT, robotics, and economic transformation.
The Ambassador also met with the leadership of the local branch of the Integration Foundation. Discussions focused on the challenges of integrating different ethnic communities in a region with a large Russian-speaking population. Representatives of the Foundation presented projects funded by the Estonian government and the European Union that promote language learning and social cohesion.
The programme concluded with a meeting with Lieutenant Colonel Taivo Porval, Regional Commander of the Estonian Defence League (Kaitseliit) in the Alutaguse district. The discussion focused on Estonia's concept of comprehensive national defense and the important role played by volunteers in strengthening the country's security and resilience in both peacetime and crisis situations.
