On Wednesday 6 December, the Natural History Museum in Tartu hosted the opening of the exhibition "Expedition to the North Pole", which maps the expedition of the Czech polar explorer Julius Payer to the Arctic Ocean and the discovery of the Franz Josef Land .
The exhibition was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Tartu Professor Leho Ainsaar and the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Estonia David Král. This was followed by short presentations by Dr. Erki Tammiksaar on the history of polar expeditions and Professor Lauri Laanisto about Czech-Estonian research on Svalbard.
However, the main highlight of the opening of the exhibition was the speech of the Czech diplomat and former ambassador of the Czech Republic to the Kingdom of Denmark Zdeněk Lyčka, who spoke in detail about the Austro-Hungarian expedition led by Julius Payer.
Finally, Ambassador David Král invited all guests to a tasting of Czech wines from Moravia, which again surprised everyone with their taste and high quality.
The exhibition will be open to the public at the Tartu Natural History Museum in the Dean's Gallery from until the end of February 2024.
