On Thursday evening, June 8, the Estonian Maritime Museum hosted a Polar Forum to discuss the expedition of Czech polar explorer Julius Payer to the Arctic Ocean, the discovery of Franz Josef Land and polar exploration in general.
Czech diplomat and former Czech ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark, Zdeněk Lyčka, presented a paper on the Austro-Hungarian expedition led by Payer. Lauri Laanisto, professor of macroecology at the Estonian Agricultural University, shared insights from joint Czech-Estonian research on the Terava Mountains, and architect and member of the Estonian Polar Club Mari Hunt spoke about her work in landscape architecture in Franz Josef Land. Mati Kaal, former director of Tallinn Zoo, reminisced about a polar bear named Franz, who was from Franz Josef Land.
After the forum, the Czech Ambassador David Král opened the exhibition "Expedition to the North Pole" on the first floor of the museum, which is dedicated to the expedition of Julius Payer. The exhibition will be open until 19 November 2023.
