On 19 September 2024, a gathering was held to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the murder of approximately 2 000 prisoners of the Klooga concentration camp in the presence of the President of Estonia, Alar Karis. The Czech Republic was represented at the event by Ambassador David Král.
The gathering began at the Klooga-Aedlinn train station, from where participants continued with a commemorative march to the mass grave memorial. The march followed in the footsteps of the prisoners who had to pass through before their execution, symbolically commemorating their tragic fate. For many, this path was their last before Nazi troops herded them into the forests where they were executed.
A memorial ceremony was held at the memorial, during which the President of Estonia, Alar Karis, gave a speech, during which he mentioned, among other things, "Evil is never anonymous, evil always has a face and a name. Under the guise of ideologies and regimes, hate crimes against humanity have been committed and carried out by specific people." In addition to him, Alla Jakobson, President of the Estonian Jewish Community, and Moriah Kolander, Consul of the Israeli Embassy in Helsinki, also spoke.
The event concluded with a prayer by Rabbi Efraim Shmuel Kot.
In a statement, the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the need to actively take actions against hatred and extremism: "We must boldly and consistently confront intolerance and incitement to hostility and violence. The cruel and inhuman Nazi ideology led to the systematic murder of millions of innocent Jews across Europe, including Estonia. In an era of growing contradictions, it is important to act so that extremism does not raise its head and the horrors of the Holocaust are never repeated."
