Ambassador Král gives lectures at the Baltic Defence College and Skytte Institute in Tartu

On 28 and 29 September 2022, Ambassador David Král paid a visit to Tartu, where he participated in two events.

On the first day, he took part in a panel discussion at the Baltic Defence College focused on the pillars of national power, representing diplomacy. He shared the stage with other distinguished panelists:  Commander-in-Chief of the Estonian Defence Forces General Martin Herem (representing military pillar), foreign policy editor of the major Estonian daily Postimees Evelyn Kaldoja (for media) and the Rector of the Estonian Business School Meelis Kitsing (representing the economy pillar). The panel debate was part of a course for lower officers and was moderated by Lukáš Dyčka, a Czech member of the staff of the Baltic Defence College.

In his intervention, Ambassador explained how the role of diplomacy has evolved in recent years, including greater openess and communication with general public, making use of the social media, client-oriented approach in a sense of providing more services to citizens while abroad or the need to share information in real time with various stakeholders. Today´s diplomacy is not confined to negotiation behind closed doors anymore.

On the second day of his visit to Tartu, Ambassador Král gave a lecture to international group of students in European studies on the topic of EU foreign policy and the role of Member States. The lecture took place in the form of a structured discussion with the course leader Thomas Linsenmaier of the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies at Tartu University. Ambassador explained the role of EU Member States in the articulation and execution of EU foreign policy, drawing on a number of examples and case studies, in particular relating to the Czech Republic and its current Presidency in the Council of the EU. Lecture was followed by a lively debate, given the international composition of the class and especially thanks to having quite a few Ukrainian students involved.

Ambassador Král plans to return to Tartu again later in October to give another lecture on EU foreign policy in the Baltic Defence College.
