Gingerbread Mania Festival in Tallinn

From 6 December 2018 to 6 January 2019, the 13th edition of the very original gingerbread festival called Gingerbread Mania, which is unparalleled in the world, takes place in the Gallery of Design and Architecture in Tallinn. Every year, around a hundred Estonian artists from a wide range of fields, who have 300 kg of gingerbread dough to create art pieces on a given topic, have been invited to the festival. This year´s topic is “100th anniversary of Estonia”.

The Czech Embassy in Tallinn was also actively involved - Zdeňka Dolejšová, a gingerbread-maker, and Zdeňka Niklová, her helper, participated in this event. Together they created three works of unprecedented proportions - to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Czech Republic and the Republic of Estonia, national trees of these two countries with other national symbols and together with a globe were made. Also a big nativity scene of Jesus Christ and Czech fairy tales´ characters from Večerníček (Little Eveninger), TV children´s night show, placed in a carousel with Večerníček at the top. The two enthusiasts have managed to transport gingerbread pieces by plane and then to work through all the last night before the opening of the exhibition. It took place on 5 December 2018 in the presence of festival participants, including Czech gingerbread-makers, invited guests and Estonian media. After the organizers Pelle Kalm and Mari-Liis Laanemaa, Marie Tománková, cultural referent of the Czech Embassy, had also a brief speech.

Apart from visiting an exhibition of gingerbread works, the public has the opportunity to participate in workshops of artists and to create their own gingerbreads. Zdeňka Dolejšová and Zdeňka Niklová had a workshop on 6 December 2018 helping to create a gingerbread advent wreath, which each participant could take home. During the workshop, all have also learnt more about the Czech gingerbread and Christmas traditions while listening to the Czech Christmas Mass by J. J. Ryba.

Gingerbread Mania is mostly an Estonian event. However, several foreign participants are involved each year – in 2018 it was Czechia, Hungary and Russia. The form of participation can be different because the organizers of the festival are interested in all kinds of gingerbread production techniques, including hand-carved gingerbread forms. The Czech gingerbread tradition is very rich and long (since the 14th century) and has been appreciated considerably in Estonia. In the past, Czechia has been involved in this event by sending a wooden form for baking gingerbread with a historical and aesthetic value.
