Karel Zeman Museum Broaching Czech Film Legend in Estonia

From 26 April to 1 May, the co-owner of Karel Zeman Museum Mr. Marcel Král and the director of the Museum Mr. Ondřej Klíma visited Estonia as being invited to HÕFF (horror and fantasy film) Festival in Haapsalu. In addition to visiting the Festival they had several meetings to plan future cooperation.

Karel Zeman Museum in Prague has a mission to promote and broach the life and work of the famous film legend together with Karel Zeman’s Canada based daughther Ludmila Zemanova. While this year the HÕFF festival set its main focus on his films and attributed him the life work award, it was a great occasion to invite here also the dedicated Karel Zeman enthusiasts from the Museum.

The delegation had a meeting with the director of NUKU Theatre Mr. Joonas Tartu and the director of NUKU Museum, Ms. Maria Usk, introducing the extensive renovation and innovation plans going on at the theatre and with the museum exhibitions.

In the Estonian Animation film studio Nukufilm the delegation had a chance to be familiarized with the process of puppets and animation-making. The visit to the studio was led by Mr. Ülo Pikkov animated film director and head of the animation department at the Estonian Academy of Arts who has received numerous awards from festivals around the world.

At the Estonian Film Achives the delegation met the director Ms. Eva Näripea and the director of Estonian Film Museum Ms. Maria Mang. While the Film Museum in Maarjamäe is currently under renovations and will be completed by autumn 2017, the Karel Zeman Museum offered a part of the exhibition for the temporary exhibition area of Estonian Museum which will be discussed further in detail.

Before the festival there was also the screening of the „Film Adventurer Karel Zeman“ in KUMU Art Museum and another screening after the festival in Supernova cinema of Baltic Film and Media School, Talllinn University.

The Festival screened three of the Karel Zeman’s films: „Invention for Destruction“ (1958), „The Outrageous Baron Munchausen“ (1961) and „The Stolen Airship“ (1966 ) which are excellent examples of the Karel Zeman’s life work. The embassy will be delighted to contribute to further cooperation with the KZMuseum and Estonian Film Museum in the near future.
