On Saturday 3 May 2025, the Czech and Slovak Association VodaFest held the traditional 12th Annual Maypole Building on the grounds of the Šumava Peksa Park Catholic Centre in Belgrave South, Melbourne, Victoria.
The event, which was attended by over 250 visitors predominantly from the Czech and Slovak expatriate community, began with the felling of the Maypole and preparation of its trunk, which was then decorated with colourful ribbons to the sound of folk singing and raised in the middle of a field. In accordance with tradition, a bottle of Slivovice was tied to the tree's upper branches.
This was followed by a song a dance performed by the children of the Czech School of Melbourne and Slovakian children's meeting group Slovenskej detskej besedy. The program for the afternoon consisted of creative workshops, during which children decorated the Morana, which was carried to a bonfire in a ceremonial procession, where it was then burnt to the accompaniment of singing (symbolising winter coming to an end in the Northern Hemisphere). At the end of the event, sausages were cooked over the fire.
The Consul-General of the Czech Republic in Sydney, Zuzana Slováková, and the Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Melbourne, Lenka Allen, gave speeches during the event. Eugénia Mocnay, the Honorary Consul of the Slovak Republic, also took part in the event.
