Mirek Smíšek’s contribution to ceramic arts imparted strength and freedom with a purpose, the bringing together of function and aesthetic. Accredited as the first craft potter in New Zealand to earn a living from his work, Smíšek advanced his craft enjoying the camaraderie of artists translating ancient forms into modern expressions.

The Residency at “The Kilns at Te Horo” first began in October 2023, and has hosted eight potters to date. It offers a ceramic artist a beautiful location to interpret Smíšek’s legacy connected to a vibrant artistic community. It is an essential element of The Mirek Smíšek’ Art Trust’s commitment to celebrate, educate and inspire.

The residency takes place at the place at The Kilns at Te Horo, where Mirek lived and worked in Te Horo. It is administrated by The Mirek Smisek Arts Trust who are also responsible for the now restored bee-hive kilns built by Mirek in the 70’s, the original native bush and surrounds that make up The Kilns at Te Horo. The resident will occupy the newly renovated Te Horo Railway station and work in the Doreen Blumhardt Red Cottage Studio – both located next to the Bee-hive kilns.

The Kilns at Te Horo is open to the public Saturday and Sunday 10am-4pm, and for groups by appointments. Host Volunteers are often on site to look after visitors. On site kilns are community kilns and therefore available for potters to use/hire. They need to be qualified to fire and the Trust approves their booking.

The potters will be onsite during these times. You will be given advance notice, and this will not impact your work or studio spaces. Applications are now open for three residency terms.

1. April/May/June 2027 (three months)

2. July/August/September 2027 (three months)

3. October 2027 – March 2028 (six months)
