The first two electric multiple units (EMUs), delivered by Škoda Group under its contract with the Bulgarian Ministry of Transport and Communications have officially arrived in Bulgaria. The new trains were presented during a ceremonial handover on 20 March 2026, attended by Minister of Transport and Communications Korman Ismailov, Ambassador of the Czech Republic Miroslav Toman, and Škoda Group CEO Petr Novotný.
Before their arrival, both units successfully underwent a full spectrum of dynamic and safety testing at Škoda’s facilities in the Czech Republic. The final phase of certification will now continue in Bulgaria, where the EMUs are set to begin operational trials on the national rail network during the week of 23 March 2026. Once testing is complete, the trains will be cleared up for regular passenger service.
Škoda Group managed to deliver the first units in just 14 months from contract signing—an exceptionally short timeline given the extensive customization required by the client. The modifications included a specific color scheme, a redesigned interior, an updated information system, and the integration of advanced safety technologies and other important features.
In addition to the delivery of a total of 25 train units, the contract includes an obligation for their complete service and maintenance for a period of 15 years, which will be provided by Škoda Group directly in Bulgaria. This cooperation model guarantees not only long-term operational reliability for the carrier, but also stable and predictable maintenance costs.
During the handover ceremony, Ambassador Miroslav Toman emphasized the significance of this commitment: “…that reflects the trust the Ministry has placed in the Czech manufacturer. At the same time, we must not forget that with trust comes great responsibility – not only to the customer but, more importantly, to the Bulgarian passengers who will use these trains for their daily commutes."
We wish Bulgarian passengers many pleasant and safe journeys with these Czech-made trains!
