Opening of the MONOSKOP exhibition by Jakub Jankovský at the Czech Center Sofia

The visual artist Jakub Janovský and curator Petr Vaňous presented an exhibition of paintings, drawings, collages, and objects titled MONOSKOP on March 5 2025 at the Czech Centre Sofia. The exhibition is organized by the Czech Centre Sofia in cooperation with GASK (Gallery of the Central Bohemian Region) and with the support of the Central Bohemian Region. On the occasion of the exhibition's opening, a speech was delivered by Mr. Jan Jindřich, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Sofia.

According to the curator Petr Vaňous, by using the title MONOSKOP for his exhibition, the artist references the past. The title serves as a unique metaphor for a gateway that once allowed entrance and exit from virtual reality. He further states about Janovský's works: "In his latest paintings, Jakub Janovský revives the still life genre, updating its status in response to the fluid and precarious relationship with time and memory, which, in the post-factual era, lose their convincing and unambiguous documentary value. Between the figure, objecthood, and space, many question marks hang, evoking unease and anxiety. The narratives allude to an atmosphere of magical realism, in which involuntary memory is released. The scent of the past lingers, referring to residues and traumas associated with the totalitarian history of Central and Eastern Europe—burdens carried by many generations."

The exhibition will be open to all art enthusiasts in the Czech Centre Sofia until 16 April 2025.
