70 year anniversary of the Deportation of the Macedonian Jews

(This article expired 01.03.2014 / 01:00.)

On 11.3.2013 Ambassador M. Rameš placed flowers before the memorial of the Macedonian Jews, who seventy years ago were taken into the Treblinka Concentration Camp. The inhumane act of the Bulgarian occupation forces in Macedonia has been a living topic ever since.

The traditional commemorative act is regularly held each March 11 and is a spontaneous activity with participation of delegations of the Jewish communities from the whole Balkans, government representatives and numerous foreign delegations. The activity is held in the premises of the tobacco factory in Skopje, in which the families of all Macedonian Jews were transported during the night between March 10 and 11, 1943. The factory changed into a temporary ghetto. 7148 prisoners in total represented 98% of the Macedonian Jewish population. Only 50 of them survived the Holocaust.
