Jiří Trnka – Serving the Imagination

On the occasion of the centennial of the birth of the great Czech illustrator, puppet maker and director Jiří Trnka, the Embassy in Skopje organized a retrospective exhibition of works and film screenings of this author.

The exhibition was prepared by the Czech Centers and was presented in the Cultural Informative Center Skopje, and the screenings of the five films (The Emperor’s Nightingale, Gabriel the Archangel and Mrs. Goose, Old Czech Legends, A Midsummernight’s Dream and Hand) was shown in the Cinematheque of the Republic of Macedonia in Skopje.

Before the opening of the exhibition, the Embassy in Skopje organized a press conference held by the Ambassador of the Czech Republic Jozef Braun, the Director of the Cinematheque of the Republic of Macedonia Mimi Gjorgoska – Ilievska and the representatives of the Cultural Informative Center Skopje.  Based on the information given on the press conference, all main Macedonian media published the information about the project, as well as about Jiří Trnka himself. Ambassador Braun also gave several interviews for the local television stations.

The invitation to participate at the opening of the exhibition was accepted also by the famous Macedonian artist Darko Markovikj. This student as well as great admirer and follower of Trnka, whose work is very popular in Macedonia, revealed in his speech at the opening, Trnka´s world artistic contribution, for which Trnka received the right to his title Walt Disney of the East.

Due to the favorable media coverage of the event before the opening, the exhibition and the films were visited by a great number of viewers.
