This year, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Singapore once again joined the EUFF European Film Festival 2025 for its 33rd edition. This time, Czech cinematography was represented by director Petr Slavík's Waltzing Matilda.
The screening took place on Wednesday 22 May at The Projector Cineleisure and attracted a large audience of local people and the diplomatic corps. The opening speech was given by Ambassador Michaela Froňková, who briefly introduced the film to the audience. Before the screening, a promotional clip from the VisitCzechia campaign was included to encourage the audience to visit our country.
The film Waltzing Matilda tells the touching story of an aging man (portraied by Karel Roden) who, after many years, reconnects with his mother (Regina Rázlová), who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. The film has been screened at several international festivals, won the main prize at the Santa Fe International Film Festival in the USA, and R. Rázlová won the Best Actress award at the 2023 Warsaw International Film Festival for her performance.
The strong performances by the two leads and the sensitive handling of the subject matter offered the audience not only a deeply human story but also an opportunity to reflect on issues of ageing, caring for loved ones and intergenerational relationships, a very topical issue not only in Singapore.
