Entry/Exit System (EES) – New EU Border Management for Short-Stay Visitors

Starting 12 October 2025, the European Union will introduce the Entry/Exit System (EES) — a new border management system for non-EU nationals traveling for short stays (up to 90 days within a 180-day period).

Who is affected?

All non-EU travelers, whether visa-required or visa-exempt, will have their data registered when crossing the external borders of EU member states.

What data will be collected?

  • Personal data from the travel document
  • Date and place of each entry and exit from the 29 Schengen countries
  • Biometric data: facial image and/or fingerprints

Gradual rollout

The EES will be gradually implemented over a six-month period, ending on 9 April 2026.
During this phase:

  • Biometric data may not be collected at every border crossing immediately
  • Personal data may not be registered in the system right away
  • Passports will continue to be stamped as usual

Data protection

All registered data will be stored in full compliance with EU data protection rules and rights, and retained for three years.
