Embassy of the Czech Republic in Seoul on a Working Visit to Gyeongju and Pohang

On 4–5 February 2026, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Seoul participated in a working visit organized by the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Korea to Gyeongju and Pohang. The purpose of the visit was to gain insight into the Korean model of support for science, research, and innovation.

The delegation visited key institutions of the Korean innovation ecosystem — Korea Technology Finance Corporation (KOTEC/KIBO), Gyeongbuk Technopark – Secondary Battery Management Center, Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL), and Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH). All of these institutions play a crucial role in the development of strategic technologies and advanced materials.

In recent years, the Czech Republic and the Republic of Korea have significantly expanded their cooperation in science and technology. In 2024, the two countries agreed to deepen their strategic partnership and broaden cooperation into advanced areas such as biotechnology, nuclear energy, digital technologies, and quantum research.

The Korean side also declared its intention to implement long-term investments to support joint research and development projects with Czech institutions. These commitments provide an important framework for the further development of bilateral innovation ties, the concrete implementation of which will depend on subsequent follow-up steps and institutional coordination. Czech academic institutions, such as the Czech Technical University in Prague, have established cooperation with Korean partners through new memoranda of understanding focused on energy research, robotics, advanced materials, and machine tool engineering. The practical implementation of these partnerships is being gradually developed with the aim of creating conditions for joint research, knowledge exchange, and the development of technologies with commercial potential.

The Embassy’s participation in this working visit thus reflects a broader strategic trend — the growing partnership between the Czech Republic and the Republic of Korea in cutting-edge research, industrial innovation, and technology policy.
