Celebratory breakfast for Human Rights Day with LGBTQIA+ Communities in Korea

On December 9, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Seoul hosted a special working breakfast with LGBTQIA+ communities and organizations to commemorate Human Rights Day (December 10).

This tradition, upheld by Czech embassies worldwide, traces its roots to the historic breakfast in 1989 between French President François Mitterrand and Czech dissidents during the French president’s visit to Czechoslovakia—a powerful symbol of solidarity and dialogue. Today, Czech embassies around the globe continue the tradition by inviting human rights activists to an annual breakfast meeting, providing a platform for open discussions on pressing human rights issues.

This year, the Czech Embassy in Seoul welcomed activists at the forefront of LGBTQIA+ advocacy in Korea. The discussion focused on key priorities for the community, including the legalization of same-sex marriage, the enactment of an anti-discrimination act, and the recognition of gender identity. The Czech Embassy shared Czechia's experiences in advancing LGBTQIA+ rights and gained valuable insights into the challenges and progress in Korea. By fostering dialogue and standing in solidarity with LGBTQIA+ organizations, the Embassy explored opportunities for further cooperation, reaffirming its commitment to promoting inclusivity, equality, and human rights in Korean and global society.
