Czech Republic to support humanitarian project of Caritas in Gaza

On 24 July 2024, the Head of the Representative Office Jakub Šlosárek and the Secretary General of Caritas Jerusalem Anton Asfar signed a contract on the basis of which the Czech Republic will support the activities of Caritas Jerusalem in Gaza with the amount of CZK 5 million from its humanitarian budget. This is not the first Czech humanitarian contribution during the ongoing conflict in Gaza, in the previous months the Czech Republic has contributed CZK 15 million to the World Food Programme.

The supported project was developped in cooperation between Caritas Czech Republic, which announced a public collection to help civilians in Gaza after the beginning of the conflict, and the local Caritas Jerusalem. The latter has been active in Gaza for a long time and works not exclusively with the local Christian community. Its twelve medical teams are running health centres providing primary medical care there. These include treatment of infectious and chronic diseases, prenatal care, treatment of children with malnutrition or follow-up care for injuries. Most of the centres are located in improvised spaces in newly established refugee camps in the central Gaza Strip. In addition, Caritas Jerusalem in Gaza is engaged in psychosocial support for children traumatised by the conflict. The Czech contribution will enable these services to be expanded to provide medical and psychological services to thousands more Gazans.
