Meeting of Czech-Namibian Children 2017

(This article expired 31.01.2018 / 10:49.)

On 28 October 2017, an event was held in which Czech-Namibian children and Namibians who lived and studied in Czechoslovakia in the 1980s, got together and this was made possible thanks to the contribution by the Embassy of the Czech Republic.

The meeting was held in northern Namibia in Ongwediva (706 km from Windhoek) for the first time (previously held in Windhoek). The event was attended by about 20 Namibians from the original group of children who grew up in Czechoslovakia in the 1980s, as well as 80 Namibians who later studied in the Czech Republic or are somehow related to this community.

The meeting was held in the garden of Mr. Nepola's house, who was the head tutor

of a group of children in Prachatice and Bartošovice. Two other children's governesses also attended the meeting.

The main organisator of this meeting is traditionally Mr. Joas Ekanjo with cooperation of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Pretoria. This year many representatives of the community attended, some who had never attended before due to the long distance from Windhoek. The meeting began with speeches by Mr. Nepola and Consul A. Sykova. After the formal inauguration, local meals and beverages were served such as Mopani caterpillars and home beer. A member of the community baked Czech traditional cakes. Czech songs were also sung during the meeting.

It was agreed at the meeting that this event could be organized alternately in the north of the country and in Windhoek. The plan for next year's meeting is to launch Kateřina Mildner's book on this community.
