The exhibition on Jan Hus is in South Africa a success

The travelling exhibition recalling the 600th anniversary of the death of the key predecessor of the Protestant movement of the 16th century was successfully displayed in Cape Town, Pretoria, Genadendal and Port Elizabeth. The Moravian Church plans to present the exhibition also in other places. We will inform you about the dates and venues once they will have been confirmed.

The series of exhibitions was organised in collaboration with the Moravian Church in South Africa.

In Cape Town it took place from 28 April to 7 May 2015 in the Moravian Chapel in the District Six. In Pretoria it took place between 5 and 8 May in the Old Merensky Library of the University of Pretoria in partnership with the Theological Faculty. In the Moravian Church in Genadendal and Port Elizabeth it was opened from 9 to 14 May 2015 and from 18 to 22 May respectively.

The exhibition revealed to many of its visitors – for most of them previously unknown – connection between the intellectual legacy of Jan Hus and the Moravian Church in South Africa. The exhibition was visited by a diverse range of people: members of Moravian Church, diplomats, University teachers and students, Czech compatriots and interested South African public.

At the opening of the exhibition in Cape Town, Pretoria and Port Elizabeth the main speaker of the Moravian Church in South Africa was Rev. Brian Abrahams and in Genadendal Rev. Chris Wessels, a historian who wrote a book about Jan Hus. The Czech Embassy was represented by Ambassador Blanka Fajkusová (Cape Town, Pretoria), Deputy Head of Mission Mrs. Nicol Adamcová (Port Elizabeth) and Ms. Ivana Klímová, Second Secretary, (Genadendal). Rev. Abrahams and Rev. Wessels recalled Jan Hus from theological perspective; representatives of the Embassy talked about Hus' significance for the Czech history. Their speeches are attached.

According to Rev. Abrahams Jan Hus put an emphasis on the personal piety of each believer and regarded the Bible as the highest authority. If the secular or church authorities did act against the Scripture according to Hus, in Rev. Abrahams' view, the believer had the right to disobey them. Rev. Abrahams recalled the important role of Jan Hus as a preacher who strived to explain the Scripture to the common people at his services.

The Czech Embassy representatives explained that the legacy of Jan Hus played a crucial role in the Czech national movement of the 19th century when he became a kind of a national secular saint. Jan Hus' concept of truth was important also for the former presidents Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk and Václav Havel. The motto „The truth will prevail“, displayed on of the Presidential flag since 1918, is also a reference to Jan Hus. The fact that the 600th anniversary of Jan Hus' death became national celebrations under the patronage the Czech president with a plethora of events taking place in all places of the country shows that Hus' legacy does still have its place in the Czech society.

The Dean of the Theological Faculty of University of Pretoria Prof. J. Buitendag pointed in his speech to the parallel between Jan Hus and former South African President Nelson Mandela. In a way both did not hesitate to sacrifice their lives because of their moral convictions.

The Moravian Church plans to present the exhibition also in other places. We will inform you about the dates and venues once they will have been confirmed.
