The Czech Spitfire Theatre Company scored an extraordinary success at the National Arts Festival, which was held from 26 June to 6 July 2013 in Grahamstown.
The Grahamstown festival (www.nationalartsfestival.co.za) is considered the largest and most important festival of its kind in the Sub-Saharan Africa and is attended by approximately 200 thousands of visitors each year.
From 4 to 7 of July 2013 the Spitfire Theatre Company presented 6 performances of the Voice of Anne Frank. The performance is based on the well-know fate of German Jewish girl Anne Frank (born 12 June 1929 in Frankfurt am Mein, died in March 1945 in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp). Anna kept a diary while she and her family were hiding in Amsterdam. The Voice of Anne Frank presents the joy and distress of a 13-years old girl, forced to live hidden in the rear part of a house. The personality of Anne Frank is performed in an original manner by Miřenka Čechová.
Four out of six performances were sold out. More than 700 spectators saw the play altogether.
According to the information by the Embassy, the Spitfire Theatre Company was the first artistic group from the Czech Republic which has ever taken part in the Grahamstown festival. Furthemore, the performance was included by the organisers in the main festival programme. The performances contributed to the presentation of the Czech culture in South Africa and to the establishment of direct contacts.
Participation of the theatre company at the festival was financially supported by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Pretoria with the kind assistance of the American Express Travel and Tours from Johannesburg.
