
Inauguration of the “Josef Škvorecký Library“ Project at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Ottawa

On April 27th Ambassador Pavel Hrnčíř launched the „ Josef Škvorecký Library“ Project. The aim of this project is to promote the work of Czech–Canadian writer Josef Škvorecký, including the publishing house “68-Publishers” that he co-founded with his wife Zdena Salivarová in 1971.
Another purpose of the project is to support Czech literature. There will be readings of Czech writers work in the library done in cooperation with Canadian Universities and other partners.
At the opening of the library professors Sam Solecki (University of Toronto), Richard Sokoloski (University of Ottawa) along with Miroslav Brát (Deputy Mayor of Náchod) and Zuzana Fernandez, who wrote her thesis on “68-Publishers”, where members of the panel that discussed Škorecký´s writing, teaching and life. They spoke about his relationship to his colleagues and students, and his personal qualities and kindness. Professor Sokoloski´s students read from the book “Bassaxofon”.
During the event Petr Cancura, Program Director of the Ottawa Jazz Festival, played the saxofon.
