On June 12th, 2024, Mr. Miloslav (Miloš) Kaláb, a man of versatile interests and hobbies, celebrated his 95th birthday. This in itself is an opportunity for great congratulations. Added to this is another significant news that arrived from Prague. Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský recognized Mr. Kaláb's work and his contribution to spreading the good name of the Czech Republic in Canada by awarding him a medal and a diploma for his services to diplomacy. Many congratulations!

On this occasion, the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Canada, Martin Tlapa, congratulated Mr. Kaláb during a pleasant family gathering, and presented him with a medal and a diploma of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic for services to diplomacy. The Ambassador also expressed his gratitude for spreading the good name of the Czech Republic in Canada and his deep admiration for the scientist‘s lifelong and tireless work and his significant contribution to the worldwide development of electron microscopy and dairy research.

Mr. Kaláb studied chemical engineering at the Brno University of Technology. He received his degree in Chemical Engineering from the Slovak University of Chemical Technology in Bratislava. In 1957 he received the title of Candidate of Chemical Sciences and two years later in Olomouc the title of Associate Professor for his studies on the biochemistry of arginases. A few years later, he was appointed the Head of the Department of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Faculty of Science of the University of Applied Sciences.

In 1966, he joined the biochemistry laboratory of W. H. Cook at the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa as a postdoctoral fellow. His planned return to his homeland was interrupted by the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968.

At the Canadian Federal Department of Agriculture's Food Research Institute, Mr. Kaláb was offered the freedom to conduct research as he saw fit, and soon began to introduce electron microscopy methods used in medicine and biology into the study of food microstructure.

His life as a scientist has been extremely fruitful, and in addition to his research and countless lectures, he has also authored more than 170 scientific papers and 16,000 English abstracts.

Mr. Kaláb fulfilled a lifelong desire to work in the fields of biochemistry, industrial arts and journalism.

He and his wife, Drahomíra, have two sons, both of whom became information technology engineers.

Every year since 2020, the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs at Carleton University in Ottawa has the opportunity to award outstanding students from the departments of Physics, Chemistry, Neuroscience, Mathematics and Statistics with the Miloslav and Drahomira Kaláb   Graduate Scholarship.

On his way out, Mr. Ambassador promised another visit in the near future and wished the Kalabs strong health and many beautiful moments with their family.
