Hilt Black Light Theatre Prague performed at the 24th Edition of Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2025

The 24th Edition of Bharat Rang Mahotsav, 2025, the world’s largest international theatre festival, welcomed the HILT Black Light Theatre Prague on the 8th of February, 2025, with a performance at the Kamani Auditorium.

HILT's Black Theatre and Shadow Theatre offers a glamorous alternative to traditional performances, perfect for those looking for a unique theatrical experience. It uses mesmerising visual effects where actors dressed in black manipulate glowing props and costumes under ultraviolet light, creating a universal experience without language barriers. The actors and everything around them float, appear and disappear, and the basic laws of physics are visually violated.

The theatre company, under the direction of Theodore Hoideker, already has a devoted following in India, having first ventured to India in 2007. Back then, they performed at a gala event in Delhi, which concluded with the involvement of Bollywood's most famous actor, Abhishek Bachchan. This was followed by a series of 4 more successful performances, such as at the biggest Asian festival in India "Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2009" and "World Theatre Olympics 2018", where the company managed to win two prestigious awards. Their success with Indian audiences stems not only from the form of Czech theatre, which is unique to Indian audiences, but more importantly from the combination of magical visuals, music and a deep emotional experience.

At the Bharat Rang Mahotsav theatre festival, organised by the National School of Drama, the troupe performed Images of Love not only in Delhi but also in Jaipur. Among the 75 theatre performances, only a few from Europe were selected by the Indian jury this time, namely Germany, Austria, Poland, Spain and HILT from the Czech Republic.

HILT Black Theatre's motto is "You must enter the darkness to see the light." The Images of Love show presents different forms of love that turn from film screenings into live black theatre scenes, offering audiences the opportunity to experience a story of romance and emotion. From the first meeting of two people, through the excitement of first dates and dance nights, viewers are immersed in a dreamlike world where love evolves and changes. The dreams take us to a many-armed goddess who symbolizes the diversity of love, but also to dark nightmares that threaten to destroy the romantic magic and drag the couple in love into stereotype.

This show goes beyond traditional theatre by offering an interactive experience where the audience can participate in the emotions of the characters. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual, allowing each audience member to let loose and live out their own romantic dreams without fear of convention.

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in New Delhi was honoured to partner with this event and witness the warm reception the show received from the Indian audience.
