The project titled „National Mass Disaster Preparedness for Schools in Bhutan – Remembering past Earthquake Events for Preparedness and Risk Reduction“ was financially supported by a fund of small development project of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic in the amount of 9 000 EUR. The project was implemented by NGO GeoHazard and Ministry of Education of Bhutan.

The project was inaugurated on 18 September 2013 by the Minister of Education of Bhutan Mr. Mingbo Dukpo and Director General of Department o Disaster Management Mr. Namgay Wangchuk. The disaster preparedness was undertaken on 20 – 22 September 2013 in 663 schools of Bhutan. Ambassador Mr. Miloslav Stašek visited the implementation of the project in Langchenphung Higher Secondary School in Thimphu and in Wangdue Chhoeling Lower Secondary School in Bumthang.

Ambassador Mr. M. Stašek opened on 22 September 2013 the closing workshop where all the project inspectors presented their final reports from the project. Mr. Miloslav Stašek informed respected Bhutanese colleagues about the vast expertise of the Czech Republic in disaster management in the area of floods, landslides, epidemics etc. and invited Bhutanese authorities in closer collaboration with the Czech Republic in this field.

The project was implemented exactly on the anniversary of tragic earthquake in Mongar province of Bhutan on 21 September 2009 which badly damaged many schools.

During his visit to Bhutan, Ambassadors Mr. M. Stašek also met with Deputy Minister of Education Mrs. Sangay Zam, Director General of Department  and Chairman of Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Bhutan Mr. Ugyen Ketschup Dorji.
