Call for nominations is open for the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize 2024. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) awards the Prize to an individual or an NGO for their outstanding civil society action in the defence of human rights. The Prize is awarded in memory of Václav Havel, playwright, fighter against totalitarianism and former President of the Czech Republic.
Candidates should have made a real difference to the human rights situation of a given group, been instrumental in uncovering large-scale systemic violations, or have successfully mobilised public opinion or the international community for a cause.
The Prize is organized by PACE in partnership with the Václav Havel Library and the Charta 77 Foundation. The prizewinner will receive a trophy, diploma and a sum of €60,000. The Václav Havel library will later organize an international conference in Prague in the winner’s honour.
