On August 18, Škoda Auto presented a modernized version of the Slavia sedan. The model, which is being developed as part of the “made in India, for India” strategy, has received a significantly revised design, new technologies and an expanded range of powertrains.
Slavia is one of the most successful sedans in its category on the Indian market. Since its launch in 2022, the car has found almost 80 thousand customers and has long been one of the best-selling models in the segment. According to the Škoda's management, the success of Slavia is proof that localized development and production can address the needs of Indian customers. Slavia is also exported from the Indian plants to Vietnam, the Middle East and African countries. The export potential is one of the reasons why Škoda considers India to be an important part of its internationalization strategy. In addition, the name Slavia refers to the very beginnings of today's Škoda Auto. When the automaker launched the model on the Indian market in 2022, it choose a name that has deep historical roots in Mladá Boleslav. It was under the Slavia brand that Václav Laurin and Václav Klement sold their first bicycles in 1896. The connection of the traditional Czech brand with the dynamically growing Indian market thus symbolizes the connection of more than 130 years of Czech industrial know-how with the future of global mobility.
The modernization brings several elements that, according to the automaker, are available in the given class for the first time. The biggest novelty is the eight-speed automatic transmission with a hydrodynamic converter for the 1.0 TSI engine. From the outside, customers will recognize the car by the new LED headlights, redesigned rear LED lights with dynamic indicators and a new design of light alloy wheels. Other innovations include the massage function of the rear seats, a camera system with a 360° view around the car or a modernized parking assistant with front sensors. Another interesting feature is the new voice assistant using Google Cloud Automotive AI Agent technology. The system has been adapted to Indian English and allows voice control of navigation, telephone, air conditioning or multimedia.
Together with the Kushaq and Kylaq SUVs, the Slavia is part of Škoda Auto’s localized portfolio developed specifically for Indian customers. The model’s continued success highlights not only the strength of Czech engineering and innovation but also the deepening economic and industrial cooperation between the Czech Republic and India. As India continues to emerge as one of the world’s leading automotive hubs, partnerships between Czech companies and Indian industry are expected to play an increasingly important role. The growth of local production creates opportunities not only for the automakers themselves, but also for a wide ecosystem of suppliers of components, technologies and engineering solutions. This is where space opens up for Czech companies that have a long tradition in the field of automotive parts, production technologies, automation and materials engineering. The success of models such as the Škoda Slavia confirms that the Indian market offers interesting potential not only for car sales, but also for the development of business and export activities of Czech subcontractors connected to the global automotive chain.
