India’s Semiconductor Ambitions Open New Opportunities for Czech Technology Companies

India is rapidly accelerating the development of its domestic semiconductor industry, with the industrial hub of Sanand in Gujarat emerging as one of the cornerstones of this national strategy. The country is investing heavily in chip manufacturing, testing, packaging, and research infrastructure as it seeks to reduce dependence on imports and become a more significant player in global semiconductor supply chains.
Until recently, Sanand was known primarily as an automotive manufacturing hub. Today, however, it is undergoing a remarkable transformation into one of India’s most important high-tech industrial clusters. Spanning more than 2,000 hectares, the area is attracting major international investors and domestic technology companies, positioning Gujarat at the forefront of India’s semiconductor ambitions.
A key milestone was reached with the launch of Micron Technology’s semiconductor facility in Gujarat. The plant focuses on Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP), a critical stage of semiconductor production that has enabled India to establish an initial foothold in the industry. The facility is expected to process tens of millions of chips annually in its first phase, with plans for further expansion.
Another major boost came during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Netherlands in May 2026, when Tata Electronics and Dutch semiconductor equipment leader ASML announced a strategic partnership related to a semiconductor fabrication project in Gujarat. The facility is expected to become India’s first major wafer manufacturing plant, marking a significant step beyond chip assembly and packaging toward full-scale semiconductor production.
Under the partnership, ASML will provide advanced lithography technologies while also supporting workforce training, supplier ecosystem development, and research capabilities. Tata Electronics’ semiconductor project represents an investment of approximately USD 11 billion and is expected to manufacture chips for automotive applications, mobile devices, telecommunications equipment, and artificial intelligence solutions.
The project reflects India’s broader ambition to build an end-to-end semiconductor ecosystem. The government views semiconductors as a strategic industry with high added value and long-term economic significance. Alongside investments in manufacturing capacity, India is strengthening engineering education, chip design capabilities, research infrastructure, and innovation networks to support future growth.
The semiconductor expansion is not limited to Gujarat. In northeastern India, Tata Group is completing a semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Jagiroad, Assam, with an investment of approximately USD 3.2 billion. Once operational, the plant is expected to process up to 48 million chips per day. The project is transforming Assam into a new technology hub and strengthening India’s connectivity with Southeast Asian markets.
A New Area for Czech-Indian Technological Cooperation?
India’s semiconductor expansion represents more than an industrial development project. It marks the emergence of a new strategic sector where Czech and Indian companies, universities, and research institutions can build long-term partnerships.
As India positions itself as a reliable global semiconductor hub, Czech companies have an opportunity to become part of one of the world’s fastest-growing technology ecosystems. Through collaboration in research, advanced manufacturing, chip design, testing technologies, industrial automation, and AI-enabled electronics, Czechia can contribute valuable know-how while strengthening economic and technological ties with India.
The development of semiconductor hubs in Gujarat and Assam demonstrates that India is becoming an increasingly important destination for innovation, investment, and high-tech cooperation, creating fresh opportunities for Czech businesses seeking to engage with one of the world’s most dynamic markets.
