Czechia: A Destination for Bollywood Productions

Bollywood, one of the world’s largest film industries, is increasingly looking beyond India for fresh and visually compelling locations. With its strong filmmaking tradition, diverse landscapes, and competitive incentive scheme, Czechia offers Indian filmmakers the perfect European backdrop to bring their stories to life.

India produces approximately 1,500 to 2,000 films annually, making it the world leader by number of films produced. The film, television, and digital audiovisual sector generated over USD 61 billion in 2024 and broader media industry is projected to exceed USD 73.6 billion in the coming year. The industry also supports up to 6 million jobs across production, distribution, marketing, and related services in India. As Bollywood continues to expand internationally, overseas filming has become a standard feature of big-budget productions. International locations not only provide stunning backdrops but also help films connect with global audiences and the Indian diaspora, which contributes around 10–12% of industry revenues. Productions regularly spend millions of dollars abroad on local services, logistics, and infrastructure—creating strong opportunities for international partners.

Why Czechia?

Czechia, especially Prague, has already hosted numerous international productions, including Indian films such as Rockstar and Jab Harry Met Sejal. The country’s appeal lies in its unique blend of historic architecture, compact and film-friendly cities, competitive costs, and a well-developed production ecosystem, including world-class studios.

Czechia offers a highly attractive package for international productions. Local production companies provide full-service support—from location scouting and permits to casting and logistics. Indian filmmakers can also rely on experienced technical crews, including cinematographers, lighting specialists, post-production studios, and VFX experts. Creative industries such as costume design, set design, and art direction are well equipped to meet the distinctive aesthetic demands of Bollywood productions. In addition, the country’s hospitality sector is experienced in accommodating large international crews for extended stays.

A key advantage is the Czech film incentive programme, offering cash rebates of 25 % to 35 % of eligible costs, significantly improving budget efficiency. Detailed information on incentives and filming conditions is available on the website of the Czech Film Commission

At the Czech national stand, representatives of the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Mumbai engaged directly with Indian producers and industry professionals. They presented key information on filming incentives, locations across Czech regions, production infrastructure, and the country’s experience with international shoots.

This engagement reflects Czechia’s strong commitment to welcoming Indian filmmakers and building long-term partnerships with Bollywood.
