
OSCE Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting

Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting co-organised by the German OSCE Chairmanship-in-Office, the Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media and the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) on the topic of "Freedom of Expression and Freedom of the Media with a Special Focus on Conflict Situations, Including Protection of Journalists and Reporting During Armed Conflict" was held on 27 – 28 October 2016.
Supplementary Human Dimension Meetings are regularly held three times a year in accordance with the decision of the Permanent Council in order to discuss the key issues raised at previous Human Dimension Meetings. The first SHDM of this year dealt with policies and strategies to further promote tolerance and non-discrimination, followed by the recent meeting in October, and the upcoming and this year's last SHDM, held in November, focusing on national minorities, bridge building and integration. With regard to the OSCE commitments in the field of protection of journalists, the main topics of the second SHDM were safety of journalists in armed conflict, media co- and self-regulation as an instrument to improve ethical standards and counter propaganda and the role of the OSCE, governments and the civil society to protect media freedom in times of crisis. Moreover, different side-events addressing the above mentioned issues in the Crimean Peninsula were organised.
