The Czech Embassy Manila unveiled a unique Art Exhibit with the theme “The Czech Republic Through My Eyes” at the Atrium of SM Mall of Asia last October 8, 2011.
The exhibit features the various artwork of Filipino university students aged 16-21 in the recently concluded art competition entitled Sining ČESko : My Czech Art.
Encouraged to ‘discover’ the Czech Republic on their own, the student artists from 8 different Philippine universities were given the creative freedom to use any art medium and material of their choice while interweaving the use of indigenous Philippine materials in portraying the artist’s reflections on and perspective of Czech culture and traditions.
The esteemed panel of judges included Ms. Monika Kazdova, Consul and Head of the Cultural Section of the Czech Embassy Manila and Ms. Millie F. Dizon, VP of Marketing and Communications of SM Group. Joining them were accomplished visual artists and trailblazers in their own right. They are: Ms Christina Dy, 2009 CCP 13 Artists Award recipient and President of Polecats Manila. Ms. Samantha Galvez Lorenzo, art teacher and curator at The Village Art Gallery. Mr. John Paul ‘Lakan’ Olivares, accomplished artist, sculptor, production and graphic designer, activist and Art History Professor at Far Eastern University.
1st place winner was Mr. Alfredo Martirez of Polytechnic University of the Philippines for his artwork entitled ‘My Perspective.’ 2nd place went to Ms. Anna Karina Jardin of Lyceum of the Philippines University for ‘Prague Mama’ and for 3rd place, Ms. Carla Gamalinda of the University of Sto. Tomas for ‘Strange and Beautiful.’
left: 1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place.
A celebration of the Czech Republic’s unique culture and the Philippines’ rich heritage through a showcase of the Filipino youth’s creative artistry, highlights of the Awarding Ceremonies included a stylized performance of the Czech Polka, the national dance of the Czech Republic and the Binasuan, a Philippine folk dance. The dance pieces were performed by De La Salle – College of St. Benilde’s Romançon Dance Company, a participant in the 2011 Setkání Festival in Brno, Czech Republic.
The event was hosted by Ms. Monique Escueta Bunuan, President of the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy Philippines.
It was a truly experiential event as the guests were also invited to taste genuine Czech beer courtesy of Pivo Praha Microbrewery.
The Sining ČESko art exhibit will be on display at the Dusit Thani Manila for the Czech Food and Cultural Festival from October 17 to 26 and The Podium from November 5 to 9.
The Czech Embassy Manila is supported by SM Supermalls, the Czech Honorary Consulate in Davao, De La Salle – College of St. Benilde Office of Culture and Arts, Pivo Praha Microbrewery, and Helen O’ Grady Drama Academy Philippines.
