The fall of communism in the Czech Republic, then part of Czechoslovakia, in November 1989 will be remembered in Manchester and in other cities in the north of the British Isles in November. A series of events, including screenings of Václav Havel’s film Odcházení (Leaving), will mark the historic change that set off Czechs on their return jurney into the family of free and democratic nations.
In Manchester and other various locations in the UK, including Edinburgh, Glasgow and Sheffield, Czech expatriots and all those who care about the Czech Republic will have an opportunity to remember and reflect on the beginngins and the jounrey the nation has made over the last 35 years. Most of the events will centre around Václav Havel and his work in the public domain, both in service of the arts and in the office of the president of the country.
It is a particular pleasure for the Czech Consulate General in Manchester to invite you to a free screening of Václav Havel’s final artistic piece, Odcházení (Leaving), a film based on Havel’s play which the former president directed himself. To highlight the role university students and young people played in the launch of the historic change of 1989, the film will be shown in Lecture Theatre A at University Place, Oxford Road, Manchester. The screeing will take place on Wednesday, 20th November at 6 p.m. It will be followed by a conversation with Josef Polášek, one of the actors in the picture and also a student activist of 1989.
The admission to the event is free, registration appreciated.
The event is being made possible thanks to collaboration with University of Manchester Czech & Slovak Society and the Czech School & Community Centre Manchester.
