On Thursday, 16 October, 2025, the Saul Hay Gallery in Manchester hosted a celebration marking the anniversary of the founding of independent Czechoslovakia. The event brought together Czech Consul General David Frous, Vice-Lord Lieutenant Sharman Birtles—representing King Charles III—Manchester’s Lord Mayor Carmine Grimshaw, and members of the local consular corps. The evening also welcomed many distinguished guests from the Czech community and regional authorities.
In their opening remarks, the Consul General and the King’s representative reflected on the legacy of October 28, 1918, while highlighting the strong cultural and economic ties between the Czech Republic and the Northwest of England today. Alongside the Consulate General’s public diplomacy efforts, guests heard about Czech the Music—a new music project launched by the local Czech community. Consul General Frous also spoke about business connections, including ČEZ’s recent strategic investment in Rolls Royce SMR, whose headquarters are based in Manchester.
The evening’s atmosphere was enriched by performances from Czech flutist Kristýna Farag and visual artist Lucie Kordačová, both of whom live and work in Sheffield.
