Information and Recommendations for Compatriots in 2026: Language Courses and Scholarships

For compatriots living abroad, we regularly organize a four-week Czech language course as part of the Programme for the Support of Czechs and the Czech Language Abroad, and we provide study stays at Czech public universities. We also organize a Czech language teaching methodology course for teachers from expatriate communities. Detailed information on individual language stays in the Czech Republic is provided below.

More detailed information about individual courses can be found on the website of the Dům zahraniční spolupráce under the Programme for the Support of Czechs and the Czech Language Abroad.

Applicants are advised to monitor the current entry regulations for the Czech Republic.

1) Semester Scholarship Study Stays

Scholarships are intended for students from expatriate communities and students of Czech studies (Bohemistics), with priority given to the following fields: Czech as a foreign language, and—depending on faculty capacity and the applicant’s Czech proficiency—teacher training in Czech language and literature. These are generally fields related to supporting and developing knowledge of the Czech language and literature. A good command of Czech is an essential condition for participation in the programme.

Before the Selection Committee meeting, scholarship applicants are required to complete an online Czech language proficiency test. The test dates are 7 and 8 April 2026. Registered applicants will receive information about the test date and login details by email (to the address provided in their application).

During their studies, students must obtain a specified number of credits (the relevant faculty will provide information about the required credits before the start of studies). Failure to meet academic requirements may result in termination of the study stay.

To apply, applicants must complete the online form available at: https://www.studujnavs.gov.cz

Application deadlines:

- for one-semester study in the winter semester of the 2026/2027 academic year (September 2026 – February 2027): by 31 March 2026;

- for two-semester study in both the winter and summer semesters of the 2026/2027 academic year (September 2026 – June 2027): by 31 March 2026;

- for one-semester study in the summer semester of the 2026/2027 academic year (February 2027 – June 2027): by 15 August 2026.

After acceptance by the respective university, the Ministerstvo školství, mládeže a tělovýchovy (through the Ministerstvo zahraničních věcí České republiky and Czech embassies) will send selected scholarship holders the Decision on the Award of a Scholarship and confirmation of accommodation. Scholarship holders will also find all necessary documents in the database under their login credentials.

Participants in semester study stays must adhere to the study dates specified in the Decision on the Award of a Scholarship and complete the entire study period, including the examination period.

2) Four-Week Czech Language Course for Compatriots

Course dates: 13 July – 7 August 2026

This four-week summer course is intended for Czech compatriots over 18 years of age living abroad who wish to learn the language of their ancestors or improve their Czech. Participants have the opportunity to become familiar with Czech culture and explore part of the Czech Republic. Instruction is provided by experienced teachers in groups divided according to language proficiency.

A rich extracurricular programme is prepared for participants (discussions, excursions, lectures, full-day trips). The course consists of a total of 90 teaching hours in groups divided according to language level. At the end of the course, participants receive a certificate of completion.

Course location: Poděbrady

Application deadline: 31 March 2026
Applicants must complete the online form at: https://www.studujnavs.gov.cz

Selected candidates will receive confirmation of acceptance through the database. Unsuccessful applicants may become alternates and will be notified via the database if additional places become available. Participants must complete the course in full; it cannot be shortened or divided among several participants.

3) Two-Week Methodology Course for Teachers of Czech from Expatriate Communities

Course dates: 24 August – 4 September 2026

This course is intended for teachers of Czech from expatriate communities. Participants are divided into two groups: teachers from traditional expatriate communities (teaching adults) and teachers from Czech Schools Without Borders and similar institutions (teaching children).

Participants complete a two-week intensive methodology course aimed at improving and stabilizing forms of Czech language instruction. The course consists of 60 teaching hours. It also includes visits to professional institutions related to the Czech language and literature.

Course location: Prague

Application deadline: 31 March 2026
Applicants must complete the online form at: https://www.studujnavs.gov.cz

A statement from the expatriate association supporting its member’s application must include endorsement and justification of participation for the benefit of the association’s educational and cultural activities.

A committee composed of representatives of the Ministerstvo zahraničních věcí České republiky, the Ministerstvo školství, mládeže a tělovýchovy, and the Dům zahraniční spolupráce will decide on admission to the course. Selected candidates will receive confirmation of acceptance through the database. Unsuccessful applicants may become alternates and will be notified if additional places become available. When selecting participants for the methodology course, the subsequent practical application of newly acquired knowledge is also taken into account. Participants must complete the course in full; it cannot be shortened or divided among several participants.

Important!

Decisions on acceptance or non-acceptance of applicants to all three parts of the educational programme will be made by a committee composed of representatives of the Ministerstvo zahraničních věcí České republiky, the Ministerstvo školství, mládeže a tělovýchovy, the Dům zahraniční spolupráce, and Univerzita Karlova.

Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.
