Concert celebrating Czech Statehood Day

On September 27, on the eve of St. Wenceslas Day, a special concert by Czech violin virtuoso Gabriela Demeterová and British pianist Harvey Davies took place in St. Anne’s Church in the center of Manchester, attended by Lord Mayor and other representatives of the city and the wider region. To celebrate Czech Statehood Day, works by Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana were performed, along with Vaughan Williams’ piece The Lark Ascending.

The concert also served as an opportunity to announce the launch of a new music project initiated by the local expatriate community, titled Czech the Music. The ambition of this initiative is, following the successful concerts of Czech musicians in the region over the past year, to introduce audiences in northwest England—and, in the future, other parts of the United Kingdom as well—to the richness of Czech musical culture across genres, from classical and film music to folklore, jazz, and swing.
