The European Union has launched the Entry/Exit System (EES) on 12 October 2025. EES is an automated information system that will register data of non-EU nationals every time they cross the external borders of European countries participating in the system.
The following countries are part of the EES: Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Croatia, Iceland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Latvia, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Austria, Romania, Greece, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
Who will be affected by EES:
The system applies to nationals of third countries travelling to the above-mentioned states for short stays (up to 90 days within a 180-day period), regardless of whether they require a visa. EES will register each entry and exit, as well as refusals of entry.
Key benefits of EES:
- Modern and more efficient border checks—replacing manual passport stamping,
- Faster border crossings—including the use of self-service systems,
- Prevention of irregular migration and identity fraud,
- Enhanced security within the Schengen area.
What data will EES collect:
- Personal data from the travel document (name, date of birth, etc.),
- Date and place of each entry and exit,
- Biometric data (facial image, fingerprints),
- Information on refusals of entry.
The data will be stored in compliance with Regulation (EU) 2017/2226, with strict data protection rules. Access is granted only to designated authorities of the Member States and Europol.
Exemptions from registration:
The system does not apply to EU citizens, residence permit holders, holders of long-stay visas, or nationals of Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, or Vatican City, as well as other specific categories (e.g., heads of state and cross-border workers).
