The Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles mourns the passing away of Mons. ThDr. Petr Esterka, Bishop of Brno. The Consulate very much appreciates the work and service that Bishop Esterka carried out for the Czech community in California. He began ministering for Czech immigrants in the USA and Canada in 1978 and, since 1999, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Brno, Czech Republic, and continued serving Mass in the Czech language for his countrymen in California.
In 2013, Bishop Esterka became a recipient of the Gratias Agit Award from the Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs, in acknowledgement of his work for the Czech Republic abroad.
Bishop Esterka passed away on August 10, 2021, in California in his 85th year.
Here in California, we will say the last goodbye to him on Friday August 20th, 2021 at 10:30am at Holy Mass in the "Christ Cathedral" (13280 Chapman Ave, Garden Grove, CA 92840).
The rosary prayer and viewing will begin at 8:30am to 10:00am, followed by Holy Mass to be served by Diocesan Bishop Kevin Vann at 10:30am. After the Holy Mass bishop's Esterka life will be celebrated in the Cultural Center on the Cathedral grounds on Chapman Avenue in Garden Grove.
After the last farewell in the USA in the community of Czech and Slovak, about whom for many years as a priest and later as the bishop took care of the Czech Catholic Mission, he will be transported to the Czech Republic. There will be a funeral mass in Brno at Petrov and in his birthplace in Dolní Bojanovice.
